Southland’s environmental champions were recognised at the 20th Annual Southland Environment Awards in Invercargill in August. There were 33 nominees, representing all corners of the region with each one contributing to the betterment of Southland’s environment.

The winner of the Commercial award was Ken Murch. Ken operates the Plasback recycling program and collects throughout Southland and Otago as well as running his own contracting business. Plasback is New Zealand’s largest “on farm” collector of agricultural plastics wastes and leading supplier of recycling services to farmers. Plasback Scheme Manager, Chris Hartshorne, said  “Congratulations to Ken. This is a well-deserved award for him as he offers a first class service to his customers and is the leading collector in the Plasback network. Now that there is a ban on burning agricultural plastics in Southland Ken offers a vital service.” The judges in this category were also impressed by his passion and innovation as well as the tonnage collected during the 12 month period– an incredible 500 tonnes.
